State routes were introduced to Queensland during the 1970s. The system was initially set up within the Brisbane City Council region before expanding to areas outside of the city boundaries. ¹

The system is limited to single and double digit route numbers and has several route numbers duplicated throughout the state but they bare no relationship to each other. The duplicated route numbers are sorted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads maintenance region they are located in.
