General Information:
State Route 9 is a short suburban arterial route linking the Townsville CBD with the western industrial areas, airport and RAAF base. It's a mix of divided and undivided road, and services mostly commercial and industrial sites. The route was once part of the Bruce Highway alignment. Approximately 13 000 vehicles use this road each day, of which approximately 25% are commercial vehicles. 1
History:
- March 1998: The Bruce Highway deviation to Woolcock Street was completed. 2
- 21 November 2014: The upgraded flood-resistant Blakey's Crossing officially opened. Its total length is 1050 metres, plus intersection work and the service road at the Duckworth St end. Approximately 75 000 tonnes of material was imported and used in the construction of embankments. Two bridges have been constructed; the three-span, 60 metre bridge over Peewee Creek and the seven-span, 140 metre long bridge over Louisa Creek. A total of 80 piles have been driven for the two bridges at depths of 20-25 metres. A total of 170 15-20 tonnes concrete deck units were used for the two bridges. 3
- December 2016: Commencement of construction of a roundabout and widening at the corner of Ingham Road, Everett Street and Weston Street, Bohle. 4
