General Information:

Signals that were released in the 1980s utilised incandescent bulbs to provide a signal to drivers. Most states and territories were including target boards to improve the visibility of signals to approaching vehicles. Some places adopted this across all signals unless space constraints prevented their use, or in selected circumstances, such as improving the signal visibility on overhead or mast arm installations.

Most states and territories used similar equipment and brands. Some of the brands of signals prevalent in this era include ATS (Aldridge Traffic Systems), AWA, Bob Panich, Eagle Signal Company of Australia (which was absorbed by ATS in 1984), Excelsior, with controllers mostly manufactured by AWA and Philips.
