General Information:

Signals that were installed in the Australian Capital Territory during the 1980s utilised incandescent bulbs to provide a signal to drivers. In the ACT, target boards were used to improve the visibility of signals to approaching vehicles. These target boards were all black with no white border around edge, unlike those used in surrounding New South Wales.

This page concentrates on signals and related equipment released between 1980 and 1989 and used within the ACT. All the signals on this page have been replaced with modern equipment.

6-aspect Signal:

A six-aspect incandescent traffic signal with 300 mm lamps. This signal was installed at the intersection of the Monaro Highway (NR23), Canberra Avenue, and Ipswich Street in Fyshwick. One of the lamps features a louvre, designed to filter sunlight that might reflect into the lens and cause a misleading indication. Louvres are also used to restrict the visibility of specific signals to traffic not governed by them.
