General Information:

Signals installed in New South Wales during the 1980s used incandescent bulbs to display indications to drivers. In NSW, target boards were implemented to enhance the visibility of signals for approaching vehicles. These target boards were entirely black with a white border around the edges, which improved the visibility of the signal heads against dark backdrops.

This page concentrates on signals and related equipment released between 1980 and 1989 and used within NSW. All the signals on this page have been replaced with modern equipment.

3-aspect Signal:

Typical 3-aspect incandescent signal with 300 mm lamps. This signal was on the corner of Towradgi Road and the Northern Distributor (SR60) (now Memorial Drive) at Towradgi. Most incandescent signals were replaced in NSW during the 1990s, however this one managed to survive into the early 2000s.
