Koo Wee Rup is a small town in the Gippsland area, built upon reclaimed marshlands at the head of Westernport Bay. The area is home to asparagus production, market gardens and dairying.
Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Bunurong Aborigines. The town name is derived from 'ku-wirup' reportedly meaning 'plenty of blackfish' or 'blackfish swimming'. The first pastoral settlements in the area were established in 1839. The settlement was known as Yallock Settlement until the railway arrived and the station was named Koo-wee-rup.
There's a number of historic buildings in the area, Bayles Fauna Park and an observation tower and it offers a great place to stop on the way to Phillip Island and other areas of Southern Gippsland.
