Nambour, Queensland's most southerly sugar cane town is also an important commercial and provincial centre for the Sunshine Coast is located just off the Bruce Hwy. The town's name is derived from the Aboriginal word "naamba", referring to the red-flowering bottle brush Callistemon viminalis.
The town is nestled in a valley formed by Petrie Creek and surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state. Established in the 1860's, the town has prospered around sugar cane, pineapples, macadamia and other crops with tourism being important in more recent times. Of interest in the area include the Big Pineapple (7km south), Blackall Ranges (10km west), Macadamia Nut Factory (7km south), Sunshine Coast beaches (10km east), Petrie & Quota Memorial Parks and an impressive shopping precinct along the old Bruce Hwy (Coronation Ave). The short deviation off the Bruce Highway through Nambour is highly recommended.
