Australian Towns & Cities
New South Wales: Taree
Incorporating photos and Information
from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways
site
Taree, situated 15km inland to the NSW Mid North Coast, lies just off the Pacific Highway between Newcastle and Port Macquarie and on the banks of the Manning River.
Although settled in the early 1830's by cedar cutters, it was not until the 1850's that a private township was laid out. Initial growth was slow due to the government deciding on another nearby location for the town (present day Wingham). When the railway was pushed north from Newcastle in 1913 (and later the Pacific Hwy) , Taree's importance surpassed Wingham and it consequently grew into a large service centre (proclaimed a city in 1981) for the Manning Valley.
The city itself is quite pleasant - the CBD and shopping precinct was upgraded once the Pacific Highway and the associated traffic was diverted further east in the late 1990's. Also of interest in the area include The Big Oyster, Fotheringham Park, Martin Bridge (over the Manning River - built in 1940) with the popular coastal towns of Old Bar and Harrington in close proximity.
The town is named after the original station name (Tarree) given by the first landholder in the area, William Wynter.
