General Information:
State Route 51 passes through Perth's eastern suburbs and was once part a major connector route from Perth to the eastern states. Since the introduction of high capacity arterial routes around the city, the significance of the route has diminished and the route acts as a feeder road to mostly residential and commercial areas. Most of the route consists of 4-lane roadway. The area this route passes through dates back to the 1800s and the area features a large number of historic buildings.
Multiplexes along the route include:
- National Route 1, for 3 km, between Guildford and Woodbridge.
History:
- 1937: Construction of Guildford Road Bridge at Bassendean, at a river crossing point used since 1831, designed and supervised by E.W. Godfrey, Transport Engineer for the Main Roads Department from 1928 to 1957. 2
- 22 March 1982: Great Eastern Highway and Victoria Street from west of William Street to east of Padbury Terrace made a one-way pair. 3
- 2005: Guildford Road Bridge, Main Roads Bridge No. 910, added to the National Trust heritage register. 2
