National routes were first introduced to Australia in 1954 following a successful trial of NR31 along the Hume Highway corridor in New South Wales and Victoria. Similar to the rest of the country, Victoria had numerous National Routes, but in 1996, these were transitioned to alphanumeric route numbers as part of the introduction of the Statewide Numbering Scheme. This page focuses on the now-retired National Routes within the state.
