General Information:
State Route 91 is a north-south route, which acts as an alternate route to Brisbane (together with Mt Lindesay Hwy (NR13) on the Queensland side of the border), via an inland routing.
The road is mostly undivided single carriageway, passing through undulating territory, and services rural, residential and commercial zones.
Multiplexes along the route include:
- National Route 38 (Gwydir Hwy), for 200 m at South Grafton
- National Route 44 (Bruxner Hwy), for 1.5 km in Casino
- Tourist Drive 22, for 4 km from South Grafton to Grafton
History:
- 1843: Surveyor James Charles Burnett surveys an old dray route, which eventually becomes Summerland Way. 2
- 1876: Construction of Irving Bridge over the Richmond River at Casino. It was the first McCallum truss bridge to be constructed. 2
- 1932: Opening of Grafton Bridge over the Clarence River. It carries both rail and road traffic. Road traffis uses the top deck, and rail travels underneath. The bridge replaced an old vehicular ferry. 2
- 1942: Construction of pyramid shaped tank traps during World War II at Paddy's River. 2
- 1950: The section between Woodenbong and Queensland border proclaimed as Mt Lindesay Highway (State Highway 24). 3 This section has since been renamed Summerland Way, and the internal classification changed to Main Road 83.
