General Information:
National Route 58 is a rural highway in southern New South Wales, which traverses within a few kilometres of the Victorian border in many instances.
The route acts as a connector, joining not only several towns in the Riverina region but also major highways such as the Cobb Hwy (NR75) and the Newell Hwy (NR39).
The eastern end of the route features a spectacular truss bridge called Bethanga Bridge, which crosses Hume Weir on the Murray River.
Multiplexes along the route include:
- National Highway 39, for 150 metres at Finley
History:
- 1886: Iron arch bridge built over Bungambrawatha Creek in Albury. 2
- 1927: Construction begins on Bethanga Bridge over the Hume Weir on the Murray River. It was designed by NSW Department of Main Roads Engineer Percy Allen. 3
- 1930: Completion of Bethanga Bridge. The road deck was initially timber. The overall span is 752 metres. 3
- 1961: Timber deck on Bethanga Bridge replaced with concrete. 3
- 1963: A 13.7 metres approach span to the Bethanga Bridge on the New South Wales side was constructed. 3
- 2005: Concrete deck replaced on Bethanga Bridge with a deck that supports more weight. 3
