General Information:
Located in Country NSW, and passing through
historic farming country, the Mid Western Highway is the most direct
route between Sydney or Brisbane and Adelaide, and consists of mainly
two-lane rural highway standard.
Multiplexes along the route include:
- Lachlan Valley Way (SR81) for 300 m at Cowra
- Newell Highway (NH39) for 37 km between Marsden and West Wyalong
- Cobb Highway (NR75) for 2 km at Hay
History:
- 1928: The Mid Western Highway was proclaimed. 2
- 1929: Route was rerouted between Gunbar and Balranald to pass
through Hay. 2
- 1933: The original route of Mid Western Highway from Bathurst to
the South Australian border via Euston and Wentworth truncated at Hay
with the proclamation of the Sturt Hwy. The Hay to South Australia
routing became part of the Sturt Highway. 2
- 1973: The Commissioner for Main Roads, Mr RJ Thomas accepted
tender of $129 775 for a new bridge to carry a deviation of the Mid
Western Highway over Mt Macquarie Road at Carcoar. The bridge was one
of three planned for the deviation. 3
- 1970s: After a series of truck accidents, a bypass was
construction to remove traffic from the Carcoar town centre. 4
- 1985: Pavement at Goldsbury Hill near Cowra constructed. 5
- 1995: Widening and provision of overtaking lanes on the Mid
Western Highway between Bathurst and Evans Plains. 6
- January 2003: Construction completed of a bypass of the village
of Kings Plains (near Blayney). 7
- June 2003: Road widening at Carcoar. 8
- Feb 2006: Construction of a new bridge over Coombing Creek,
Carcoar.
- March 2010: Pavement reconstruction at Goldsby Hill, which
included bringing the road up to current standard at the time, and
improved drainage. 5
