General Information:

B53 is a route linking Newcastle's western suburbs to the Pacific Motorway (M1) and passes through several small communities, bushland and industrial areas.

The route is a mix of divided urban arterial road, to undivided rural road standard, and features a grade separated interchange with Rocky Point Road for traffic accessing the power station at Eraring.

History:

• January 2005: Commencement of upgade works to Five Islands Road to a four-lane divided carriageway with two new bridge crossings over Cockle Creek between the roundabouts at Booragul (York & First Street) and Speers Point (Creek Reserve Road & The Esplanade). 2
• April 2006: Open the new bridges on Five Islands Road in a temporary traffic arrangement to allow refurbishment of existing bridges. 2
• November 2006: Completed road works on Five Islands Road at Anzac Parade in Teralba. 2
• 25 January 2007: Five Island Road is opened to four lanes January. 2
• March 2007: Five Islands Road upgrade completed. 2
