General Information:
Pacific Motorway is broken into several sections.
The northernmost sections run between Port Macquarie through to the Queensland border, and features several tunnels, including Yelgun and Tweed Heads. The latter travels under Coolangatta Airport. In that segment, the route through the Coffs Harbour area is signposted as Pacific Hwy (A1), whilst the rest is signposted as Pacific Mwy (M1).
History:
- December 1996: Chinderah Bypass, 5.7 km in length, opened to traffic. 2
- June 1998: Partial opening of Brunswick Heads Bypass
- August 2002: Yelgun to Chinderah Freeway, 28.6 km in length, opened to traffic. 3
- April 2006: Construction commences on Tugun Bypass. 4
- 11 July 2007: Brunswick Heads Bypass. 8.6 km in length, opened to traffic.
- 2 June 2008: Tugun Bypass opens to traffic. 5 The route consists of dual two-lane carriageway, interchanges, four bridges, and a 350m twin-tube tunnel under the Gold Coast airport runway. 6
- 1 May 2009: New South Wales Government Gazette shows the internal classification of HW10 has been shifted from Pacific Hwy (now Gold Coast Hwy) onto Tugun Bypass. 7
- December 2009: Work begins on re-routing of Pacific Highway through Banora Point. 8
- September 2012: Completion of the Banora Point upgrade. 8
