Northern Territory: Alice Springs
Incorporating photos and Information
from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways
site
Located in Central Australia, Alice Springs is the third
largest town in the Northern Territory. Originally called Stuart (after
European explorer John McDouall Stuart), the town is named after Alice,
Lady Todd (née Alice Gillam Bell), wife of the telegraph pioneer Sir
Charles Todd. The area is known as Mparntwe to its original inhabitants,
the Arrernte.
The town is adjacent to the Todd River (which is mostly
dry) and also the MacDonnell Ranges. The town features a number of
historic buildings, including the old Overland Telepgraph Station, and is
close to some of the regions popular tourist attractions including
national parks, and is just a few hours away from Uluru.
The Adelaide-Darwin railway services the town and the
Royal Flying Doctor Service has its dispatch centre there and the Alice
Springs School of the Air, a distance education organisation, is also
based in Alice Springs, and provides teaching, education materials and
personal communication for remote children in remote areas of the Northern
Territory.
